Added Fun to "Family Pumpkin Pickin' Day" Block

Updated: Oct 13, 2020

When I first started sketching my "Sunbonnet Family" blocks for Quilt Block Mania, I was trying to decide of I wanted to use them as a simple, single block wall hanging or something elaborate. I went with fun.

The Family Pumpkin Pickin' Day block the background is a simple sunset. I was really wanting to do the hand quilting seamlessly. I wanted it to flow. Therefore, unconventionally, I decided to hand quilt the sunset and the ground before I added the Sunbonnet family. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but I actually like it!

All I had was solid brown but I wanted something that looked like it had a wood grain. In stead with different shades of brown thread I quilted a wood grain into frame. I love it! You can quilt this part before or after the applique, it doesn't really matter the results are the same.

To frame, like mine cut two (2) 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" strips and sew onto each side. Then cut two (2) 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" strips and sew onto the top and bottom. Square the block to 16 1/2 inches. The easiest way to add the frame is prior to any quilting!

I replaced the pumpkin from the pattern with two I cut out from a piece of fabric. As you can see, I also put one on the ground beside Momma. Instead of the template wheels I used buttons. With a thin piece of yellow ribbon I sewed a little bow on the older girls hat. What do you think? Let me know in the comment section below!!
