2025 June Quilt Block Mania

My Papaw and I around 2022
My Papaw and I around 2022

This block has been with the feelings! A large part of my life recently has been seeing my grandfather in the hospital and nursing home. It is hard to see a loved one fading away. At one point, I snapped a picture of the hospital he was in but, I chose not to use it. Now, I'm glad I didn't because he passed away May 22nd. I want this quilt to be fun happy memories, not one tainted with personal hardships.

Instead, I have always had an interest in old-old quilts. Between the handwork, complicated designs, beauty, and unique stories, I love them. One specific quilt stuck with me. It was created during World War 1. There were 185 red cross squares and on each square was embroidered four names. The fundraising came from purchasing a spot to have a name added. It is unknown exactly how much was raised for the American Red Cross, but the speculation is around $1,000.

Since I don't have permission to share the photographs, you can see the quilt and read more about it here: https://piedmontvahistory.org/archives14/items/show/120

My block is a derived representation of something so much bigger. It contains five red crosses put together as a nine patch 12" block. I suppose, if you so desired, you could make multiple 12" blocks, sew them together and create your own fundraising quit for a medical related charity.

The fabric is from Charisma Horton's "Live Boldly" collection by Timeless Treasures with colors Red and Fog.

Sign-up to receive the block via email. You only have to register once to receive my monthly email, which includes the complimentary block download. The sign-up request is on the home page. If you don't receive an email right away, don't fret! I have to send them out manually. It will come, I promise!

Since we are on month six, here is a peak at this quilt blocks and their photos thus far!
